Using Blogs for Your Children's School Work

I wanted a place for all my kids school work online so if we lost something it would be safe.  After loosing 10 years worth of my children's school work in our house fire just over a year ago, I didn't want a repeat of something like that.

I started a blog for each of my school age children under my blogger account and made them authors on the accounts.  I did it this way so I didn't have to log in and out of separate accounts.  They add reports, little bits of information about topics we are studying, make journal entries and they also like adding pictures that relate to what they are writing about.   We also take photos of notebooking pages, lapbooks and projects they have completed and add those as well.  They will often copy and paste what they wrote on their blog into a word processor and create a notebook page, dressing it up a little more then they would on their blog.

Blogger is great because they have lots of little gadgets to make this simple for a homeschooling parent.  They have a gadget called "labels" so your child can add the labels at the end of their post and then every subject is in its own category.  I LOVE this feature.  I can look at all their writing assignments on one page, for example.  Blogger is so user friendly this way and very easy for even young children to learn.

My youngest son, who is 10, is the most excited about his blog and adds at least 4-5 entries every day.  Some of things we add to his and the other kids blogs are:  typing, writing assignments, nature study findings, and scriptures we are studying.  I will type while he narrates because after a few minutes his fingers tire.  He types out scriptures he is studying and then also uses them for his copywork.

You can make your children's blogs private and only invite those you trust to read them.  Grandparents especially get a big kick out of them.

Having blogs for our kids has been a great thing for our family.  It is in a safe and secure place and they can look back on them for years to come.

Quick Lessons about Type 1 Diabetes

As mentioned in a previous post, my daughter has type 1 diabetes. Most people don't know that there are differences between type 1 and type 2. One major difference being that type 1's must take insulin for the rest of their lives to survive. Here are a few links that might help educate you and your children about this chronic illness. These links are basically just quick facts but I believe it's a good thing to understand.

Freebie - School and Chore Charts

    School and Chore Charts

A collection of charts for home & school. Included are cards to add to your child's chart for both chores and school.

My suggestion for these charts would be to print them on card stock and then print the chore cards on magnet sheets. You could then use them on a white board or refridgerator. Another choice would be to also print the cards on card stock and place velcro in the blocks of the charts and backs of the cards and use them that way. I would also suggest that you laminate your charts.
The larger cards could also be printed onto magnet sheets. You could use the blank page as a guide to create a larger chart for your child or to allow your child to add other chores or subjects.

    Freebie - Family History Notebook

    All About My Family Notebook

Have your children create a notebook about the most important people in their lives, their family! Your child could interview individuals from your family to learn more about their heritage, add photos and write biographies of those who have passed on. There are pages for them to add personal information about themselves to pass down to their future children. They might choose to create a family tree on poster board or a wall with all the people they have learned about. Children love to hear stories about their family and this notebook could be a way to collect and keep these stories alive for future generations!

    An Important Reminder

Melissa Telling, a friend, fellow homeschooler and creator of many wonderful products (Lilliput Station) wrote an excellent article about copyrighted material. I completely agree with every wonderful word she wrote. I believe this is a must read for all homeschoolers and an excellent reminder that "free" doesn't always mean "free". Great job, Melissa!

Here's a You Tube video that goes along well with this topic as well.

    My Eagle Scout

I'm the proud mama of an Eagle Scout! My 15 year old son, Brandon, earned his Eagle and I couldn't be more proud of him. He has been involved in scouting since he was 8. He has always and still loves being a part of the program. My husband and I were his Cub Scout den leaders and he has AMAZING leaders as a Boy Scout that have kept him very focused.

For his project he put 38 signs along the Colorado River for the Mohave Indian tribal police. They needed numbered signs for each of their public beaches. He actually did this project over several Saturdays last summer. He received his Eagle with 4 other young men back in January. Way to go Brandon!!! We are all sooooo proud of you!

    Type 1 Diabetes

On December 7, 2008 my 17 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Like most people who do not have to deal with this chronic illness on a daily basis, I knew very little about it. Since then I've learned so many things and have to say how amazed I am with my daughter. Her great attitude and courage have given me so much strength. She is a daughter of kind and wonderful Heavenly Father who loves her and she loves him. She is such a blessing to me and the rest of our family.

The reason for this post is to add an essay my daughter wrote for her English 101 class. She received an A for the paper and I was so impressed with it I wanted to post it.

    Type 1 Diabetes

It was December 7, 2008 on a beautiful Sunday morning; my mom woke me up at 6:00 with a concerned expression on her face. She sat next to me on my bed and told me that my dad, who is a doctor, thought that I might have type 1 diabetes. Over the past several months, I had been experiencing many complications that led him to this conclusion. I was not aware of what type 1 diabetes was, so I was not too bothered by it.

Soon after my mom told me the news, we drove straight to a drug store to buy a glucose monitor to test my blood sugar, also known as glucose. Unfortunately, my glucose was approximately 400; the normal range is 80 to 120. Now my dad knew for sure that I was type 1 diabetic. He explained to me a list of symptoms of the disease, which some are: unusual thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger but loss of weight, blurred vision, extreme weakness and fatigue, irritability and mood changes. I had had every one of these symptoms for about two months.

What causes type 1 diabetes is unknown; however, they say a child that has a parent or sibling with type1 diabetes has a 2 to 6% chance of succumbing to this disease. According to my mom, the only person in my family that has type1 diabetes is my grandmother’s first cousin. My mother also had gestational diabetes with all five of her pregnancies, but her temporary diabetes was the worst for me. Babies who weight 9 pounds or more have a greater chance of getting type1 diabetes and all of my brothers and sister weighed 9 pounds or more.

There are many issues that can occur with type 1 diabetes. If I do not take special care of myself I could develop complications and life threatening diseases, such as: heart and blood vessel disease, kidney disease, loss of eye sight, feet and skin issues, depression and even losing a limb. The best ways I can prevent these from happening to me is by taking care of my blood sugar with insulin shots, eating healthy, exercise, and seeing my doctors frequently.

I have to be very careful, particularly with my glucose. There have been some times when my blood sugar was dangerously low. Most people would be hospitalized, but thankfully my father is a doctor and knows the basics of type1 diabetes. Sometimes I fear that someday I will go to bed like any normal night and never wake up. This has happened to some diabetics.

Ever since I was diagnosed, I have had to change my life style almost completely. There are so many things I have to do daily to control my diabetes. I have to prick my finger 10 times or more in order to check my glucose, give myself 4 shots of insulin, eat very healthy, I personally exercise forty-five minutes and all this information needs to be logged into a journal for my doctor to review. There are many other little necessities I do each day in order to stay in good health.

Although type 1 diabetes may sound frightening, a big part of me is happy to have it. Diabetes has forced me to take my health seriously - I have become very aware of my eating habits and the way I physically take care of myself. I know if I continue to pay close attention to my health I will live a long, happy and healthy life.

    Our Website is Down

I've had many people contact me about our website being down. Yes... unfortunately our site is down and has been for a couple weeks now. This is temporary and we are working on getting it back up again. We host and manage the website ourselves and the guy who helps us has been too busy to get it up and running again. I'm hoping by next week sometime. If this doesn't happen I'll probably start posting my free files up at a hosting site and add the links here. This is part of the reason I'm using this blog after neglecting it for over a year :) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience.

Until then you can make purchases at CurrClick.com
