Organizing All That Unused Paper

This looks like a somewhat decent way to store your paper and for me it worked for many years.  BUT, it took up not only the  three shelves shown in this picture, but two others.... that's 5 shelves I could have been using for something else, like BOOKS for example.  I wanted a different way of storing all that unused paper.

If you do notebooking or lapbooking, chances are you have a lot of paper in several weights and colors.  I like to keep the colors and weights separate from one another... just a little OCD :)  Anyway, I saw this paper organization system on a blog several months ago and I WISH I knew where it came from!  If you do please let me know so I can give credit where it's due.  Anyway,  it's so easy and makes so much sense, I can't believe I didn't think of it before.

All you need is a file crate and hanging folders. I use colored folders and put the same or similar colors in the files.  So here's my version of this system.

So easy! Now...  what to do with all those paper trays?  I know what to do with the 5 empty shelves! :)

Let me know how you store your paper.  I'm always open to new and different ideas!  I'm working on organizing my schoolroom better so any and all ideas are welcome!

School and Chore Charts Tutorial

School & Chore Charts
So nearly 20,000 of you have downloaded this chore chart system, but do you use it?  Do you see the vision here?  So many times I download something from the internet and think to myself "well, that's cute, but I don't get it."  So yesterday, I made my son a new chart (the last one got destroyed long ago when we moved).  I know, it took me nearly two year to get around to making him a new one.  I'm not sure why?   I guess I thought he was getting too old for it.  But, when he saw it finished he said "Oh mom, I remember that chart... I loved it!"  Then my 14 year old daughter asked when hers was going to be finished.   I was shocked!  But, it's so easy to use, you'll see why.

Here's what you'll need to get started:
  • half size poster board (if you're using the smaller chart you can use the small poster boards that come in a 5 pack)
  • velcro sticker buttons (keep in mind that you will need double of one side of the velcro to add to the poster board)
  • scissors
  • double stick tape
  • I also print out something like 'Chris' Chore Chart' to add to the top
Here's how I put it together...
  1. First, print off your card choice (small or large)... I personally like the large.
  2. Cut them out and laminate them.
  3. Print out the grid using colored paper (if desired) and laminate.
  4. On your grid chart, add a velcro button to each square
  5. Then add the opposite velcro button to the velcro on the grid chart
  6. Next, add all the cards to the grid... the 'opposite' side of velcro will stick to the back of the cards.
  7. Now add the 'opposites' again to the back of the cards.
  8. Add double stick tape to the grid and add it to the bottom of the poster board.
  9. Above the poster board add all the cards.
  10. Add title with glue or double stick tape.
  11. Trim around the poster board
Cards before laminating.

Chart before trimming the poster board.

Finished Charts

In the morning, I just put everything I want him to do that day on the top portion of the chart.  Once he's completed the task he then puts the card on the grid portion.  He's finished when the grid is full.  And,  all you have to do is grab the cards you want them to accomplish that day and move them off the grid.  SO EASY!!!

Freebie - Five Week Menu Planner

A few years ago I attended a homeschool conference and one of the workshops I attended had a homeschool mom that spoke about menu planning. She talked about how she would plan 5 weeks of menus, which made her shopping much easier. Her family had the same things for breakfast and lunch every week. Meaning, Monday was always the same thing, etc. She would plan themes for each dinner; crock pot, pasta, BBQ, casserole, ethnic, etc. We use this plan and it works wonderfully. I've created pages to help in putting together this plan.

Our New School Room

We are considering having desks made but going to put that off for a while.  The old folding desks have worked great for many years.

Paper storage

Small storage and built-in bookshelves above

We are having desks made that are just about finished for each of the dormer windows.  I'll probably replace this pic once those are finished.

Built in shelves and storage

Built-in storage in between the dormer windows

Two white boards with built-in shelves surrounding

Both white boards are also murphy beds.  We left one bedroom out when we rebuilt the house and this is where our oldest stays when she is home.  It's great because she can bring a friend along.

Freebie - School and Chore Charts

School and Chore Charts

A collection of charts for home & school. Included are cards to add to your child's chart for both chores and school.

My suggestion for these charts would be to print them on card stock and then print the chore cards on magnet sheets. You could then use them on a white board or refridgerator. Another choice would be to also print the cards on card stock and place velcro in the blocks of the charts and backs of the cards and use them that way. I would also suggest that you laminate your charts.
The larger cards could also be printed onto magnet sheets. You could use the blank page as a guide to create a larger chart for your child or to allow your child to add other chores or subjects.
